The Birch Knob Observation Tower is a steel tower located on the highest point of Pine Mountain, on the Kentucky/Virginia border within the Jefferson National Forest. Built by the U.S. Forest Service and completed in 2003, it offers 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains and up to six states on clear days: Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio. Access involves a moderate hike on a trail with many steps to reach the top, which stands at an elevation of 3,144 feet above sea level.
